Most recovery companies around Reading will happily collect a car that starts, rolls and steers. The jobs that separate a proper recovery operator from a man with a trailer are the ones where none of that is true: the car has locked wheels and no keys, it’s been in a crash and a wheel is hanging off, it’s a two-and-a-half-tonne electric SUV with a dead battery, or it’s a Sprinter full of tools that can’t be left at the roadside. This guide explains how we handle each of those at Ozzy’s Breakdown Recovery, what the equipment is, what it costs, and what to tell us when you ring 07778 348703.

The kit on our truck, and why it matters
Our recovery truck is a 7.5-tonne Isuzu with a tilt-and-slide flatbed body. That one piece of equipment is the reason we can take jobs other operators turn down. On it we carry:
- Four wheel skates – small steel dollies that go under each tyre so a vehicle rolls on the skates, not on its own wheels. This is how we move cars with seized brakes, locked steering, no keys or a gearbox stuck in Park.
- A winch rated for vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes – for anything that can’t be driven on.
- Long low-approach ramps – for sports cars, lowered cars and anything with a deep front lip.
- Four-point ratchet wheel straps – over the tyres, never on bodywork or suspension arms.
Everything is loaded with all four wheels off the road. That’s safer for automatics, four-wheel drives and electric cars, and it means nothing on your vehicle is turning or taking strain on the journey.
Non-runners: cars that won’t roll, won’t steer or have no keys
This is the job people ring us about after two other companies have said no. The car has been sitting on a driveway for six months and the brakes have seized. The automatic has a flat battery and is stuck in Park. The keys are lost and the steering lock is on. A corner has collapsed and the wheel is at an angle.
We jack each corner, slide a skate under the tyre and lower the car onto it. With all four skates in place the car is winched up the bed without a single wheel turning. It takes longer than a straightforward load, so skate recovery is priced on top of the normal call-out, and we tell you the full price before we set off.

Heavily damaged and written-off cars

After a collision a car often can’t be rolled and sometimes can’t be steered. Panels are hanging, a wheel may be missing, airbags are out. We secure or remove loose parts, use skates where the car doesn’t roll, winch it up slowly and strap it down at four points. It can go to your bodyshop, your dealer, your home, your insurer’s assessor or a salvage yard, anywhere in the UK.
If the car is in a live lane, get everyone to safety first and call 999. Once it’s safe, call us. We also collect from police compounds once you have the release paperwork.

Electric cars: lifted on skates, all four wheels off the road

An electric car’s motor is connected to the wheels permanently. Drag it along on its wheels with no power and the motor acts as a generator, which can damage the drive unit and the battery. Every EV handbook says the same thing: flatbed only. The complication is that an EV with a flat 12V battery often can’t be put into neutral or transport mode at all, so it can’t even be winched normally. We put a skate under each wheel and winch it up on the skates.
Weight is the other issue. A Tesla Model X or Audi e-tron is around 2.5 tonnes and an electric van can be close to 3.5. Our flatbed and winch are rated for that. We recover Teslas, Polestars, BMW i4 and iX, Audi e-tron, Kia EV6, Hyundai Ioniq 5, VW ID.3 and ID.4, MG4, Nissan Leaf and electric vans such as the e-Vito and e-Transit, and we’ll take you to the charger or dealer you choose.

4x4s, SUVs and pickups

A Range Rover, Discovery, Hilux, Ranger, X5 or Q7 weighs two to three tonnes before anything goes in it, and plenty of smaller recovery trucks can’t carry one safely. Permanent four-wheel-drive systems also shouldn’t be towed with two wheels down. We lift the whole vehicle. A Range Rover with failed air suspension sitting on its bump stops goes up on the tilt bed with skates if needed. A 4×4 stuck in a muddy field gets winched to firm ground first, then loaded.

Fully loaded vans up to 3.5 tonnes
When a works van breaks down the load is half the problem. You can’t leave £10,000 of tools at the roadside and you can’t unload a van full of parcels into a lay-by. You don’t have to. As long as the van and its load are within 3.5 tonnes GVW (the figure on the plate inside the door), a loaded Transit, Sprinter, Crafter, Vivaro, Boxer or Transporter goes on the flatbed exactly as it is, locked, and comes off at your garage, your depot or your home.
Tell us the make and model, roughly what’s in the back, and whether it rolls and steers. If the plate says more than 3,500 kg we’ll tell you straight away rather than waste your time.

Low, lowered and sports cars
A steep bed angle will catch the splitter, the sills or the exhaust of a low car. Our tilt-and-slide body drops the whole bed to the ground and we add long low-approach ramps for the cars that need even less angle. The car is winched up slowly with someone watching the front lip, then strapped over the wheels so nothing touches paint. Porsches, AMGs, GT-Rs, Caterhams, classics and cars on coilovers or air ride all load the same way.
