Broken down on the M4? Here’s what to do
First, get safe. Pull onto the hard shoulder or into an emergency area if you can, put your hazard lights on, then get out on the left and wait behind the barrier. Then call 07778 348703. We do M4 breakdown recovery day and night, so help is never far away.
We’re close to junctions 10, 11 and 12, so we cover the M4 through Berkshire – roughly junctions 6 to 14 – in both directions. That also includes Reading Services and Chieveley Services.

Junction by junction
- Junctions 8/9: Maidenhead and the A404(M).
- Junction 10: Wokingham, Bracknell and the A329(M).
- M4 junction 11: south Reading, Shinfield and the A33.
- Junction 12: Theale and Calcot and west Reading.
- M4 junction 13: Newbury, Chieveley Services and the A34.
- Junction 14: Hungerford and the Berkshire border.
Reading Services sits between junctions 11 and 12, with a site on each side of the motorway, so tell us which side you’re on.
No hard shoulder between junctions 3 and 12
From junction 3 to junction 12 the M4 is a smart motorway, so there is no permanent hard shoulder. If something feels wrong with the car, leave at the next junction or pull into an emergency area before it stops. They are marked with blue signs and an orange SOS phone symbol.
If you stop in a live lane and can’t get out safely, keep your seat belt and hazard lights on and call 999. National Highways or the police will make the lane safe and may move your vehicle off the carriageway. We can collect it from there.

To your own garage, your home, or a garage near the junction where you stopped. If you were on a long journey, tell us where you were heading and we’ll give you a price for taking the vehicle there.
