A motorway is the most dangerous place to break down, so act early. These steps follow the Highway Code. They’re worth knowing before you ever need them.
If something feels wrong
Don’t wait until the car stops. Instead, leave at the next junction or pull into a service area if you can.
If you have to stop
- Move into the left lane, then onto the hard shoulder or into an emergency area. Emergency areas have blue signs with an orange SOS phone symbol.
- Stop as far to the left as you can, with your wheels turned to the left.
- Switch on your hazard lights. Also keep your sidelights on if it’s dark or foggy.
- Then get out by the left-hand doors. Make sure your passengers do the same.
- After that, wait behind the safety barrier, and move up the bank if there is one.
- Leave animals in the vehicle.
- Don’t put out a warning triangle.

Use the orange SOS phone in the emergency area, or ring National Highways on 0300 123 5000. They will tell you what to do, and they can also protect the scene. Then call your recovery firm. Our number is 07778 348703.
If you’re stuck in a live lane
If you can’t get to the left, or can’t get out safely, stay in the vehicle. Keep your seat belt on, switch on your hazard lights and call 999 straight away.
Smart motorways
Some stretches have no permanent hard shoulder, including the M4 between junctions 3 and 12. The left lane is a normal running lane. Aim for an emergency area, and if a red X is showing above a lane, stay out of it.

- The last junction you passed, or the number on the nearest marker post.
- What you’re driving, and whether it still rolls.
What not to do
- Don’t try to repair the car on the hard shoulder.
- Never stand between your vehicle and the traffic.
- Don’t cross the carriageway.
