You can’t push a broken-down motorcycle far, and you shouldn’t ride it with a flat tyre or a slipping clutch. So here’s how to get it moved without damaging it.
Look after yourself first
Get off the road. If you can wheel the bike onto the verge or the pavement safely, do. If you can’t, leave it and get yourself clear instead. Keep your helmet and gloves with you, and also switch on the hazard lights if the bike has them.
Why a bike needs a proper recovery truck
A motorcycle has to travel upright and held firmly, otherwise it falls over. That means a flat load bed and enough strapping points to hold it at the front and the back. The back of an ordinary van, with a couple of bungee cords, isn’t the same thing.
How we secure your bike
- We wheel or winch it gently onto the truck.
- Then we strap it upright at several points, so it can’t lean or roll.
- We check the straps before we set off.
- Our vehicle-in-transit insurance covers it for the journey.
What not to do
- Don’t ride on a flat tyre, because it can damage the wheel. It can come off the rim.
- Don’t let anyone tow the bike on a rope.
- Don’t leave the bike lying in the road if you can safely stand it up.

- Put the bike in neutral and take the steering lock off.
- Have the key ready.
- Take off loose luggage.
- Tell us about any damage, and whether the wheels turn.
