What to do if you break down on a motorway
- Move left onto the hard shoulder or into an emergency area as soon as you can.
- Switch on your hazard lights.
- Then get out by the left-hand doors and wait behind the barrier.
- If you can’t get off the carriageway, stay in the vehicle with your seat belt on, then call 999.

Motorway assistance without a membership
You don’t need breakdown cover before you get help on a motorway. Call us and tell us where you are, then we’ll give you one price for collecting the vehicle and taking it where you want. We recover cars, motorbikes and vans up to 3.5 tonnes. However, we don’t recover lorries or HGVs.
Is motorway recovery ever free?
Only in some roadworks. Where signs say “Free recovery, await rescue”, National Highways arranges a free tow off the motorway to a place of safety. That service isn’t run by us, and it won’t take your vehicle home or to a garage. That’s where we come in: call us and we’ll take it wherever you need. Everywhere else, you pay for recovery unless you have breakdown cover.

What if there’s no hard shoulder?
Try to reach an emergency area – they have blue signs with an orange SOS phone symbol. If you can’t, stay belted in with your hazard lights on and call 999.
Do I need breakdown cover?
No, call us directly for a one-off recovery, then pay only for that job.
Is motorway recovery free?
Only in some roadworks, where signs say free recovery is provided. That takes you off the motorway to a safe place. From there, and everywhere else, recovery is paid for.
How long does motorway recovery take?
Our recovery team is available 24 hours a day. When it’s an emergency we aim to be with you within 30–45 minutes, and within an hour at busier times, subject to availability. We’ll give you an honest arrival time when you call.
