With motorway recovery, the wait depends less on how far away the truck is and more on which side of the road you’re on. Here’s why, and what you can do to help.
Direction matters more than distance
A recovery truck can’t turn round on a motorway. If we’re coming from the other direction, we have to drive past you to the next junction, come off and come back on your side. On a long gap between junctions, that adds real time. It’s why the first thing we ask is which way you were travelling.
The queue you’re causing
If your car is in a live lane or the hard shoulder is narrow, traffic slows behind you. The truck coming to help has to get through that same queue.
Lane closures
On a smart motorway, National Highways may close a lane with a red X to protect you. That keeps you safe, and it also means recovery sometimes has to wait until the scene has been made safe.
Services are quicker
If the car gave up at a service area, it’s a much simpler job. We collect it from the car park. Tell us the name of the services and which side you’re on.

- The last junction you passed, or the number on the nearest marker post.
- Whether you’re on the hard shoulder, in an emergency area or at the services.
- What you’re driving, and whether it still rolls.
How long, then?
We’re closest to M4 junctions 10, 11 and 12, so that stretch is the quickest for us. The M3 and the far ends of the M4 take longer. We’ll give you your price and an honest arrival time when you call.
