Most breakdowns come down to a short list of causes. Here’s how to recognise each one, and whether it can be sorted where you are or needs a garage.
Flat battery
The most common of all. You turn the key and get a click, a slow churn or nothing. A jump start usually gets you going. If the battery is old, it will need replacing soon.
Tyres
A puncture, a blowout or a tyre that has gone flat overnight. If you have a spare and a safe place to change it, you can. Otherwise, the car needs carrying to a tyre shop. We don’t fit tyres, but we can take the car there. See flat tyre recovery.
Alternator or starter motor
If the battery light comes on while you’re driving and the lights fade, the alternator has probably stopped charging. If the dashboard is bright but the engine only clicks, it may be the starter. Both need a garage.
Clutch and gearbox
The pedal goes soft, the gears won’t select or the engine revs without the car pulling. Don’t force it. The car needs recovering.
Overheating
The temperature gauge climbs into the red, or steam comes from under the bonnet. Stop as soon as it’s safe, switch off and don’t open the coolant cap while it’s hot. Driving on can wreck the engine, so stop as soon as it’s safe.
Fuel
Running out, or putting in the wrong fuel. If you’ve put in the wrong fuel, don’t start the engine. We don’t deliver fuel or drain tanks, but we can take the car to a garage that does.
Keys and electronics
A dead key fob, an immobiliser fault or a steering lock that won’t release. Try the spare key first. If the car still won’t wake up, it needs recovering.
Electric cars
Electric cars break down less often, but they still have a small 12V battery that can go flat, and they can run out of charge. They must be carried, not towed. See electric vehicle recovery.
How to avoid most of these
- Check your tyre pressures and tread once a month.
- Have the battery tested before winter if it’s more than five years old.
- Check the oil and coolant levels.
- Don’t ignore warning lights.
- Keep at least a quarter of a tank of fuel.
