After an accident, someone has to move the car, and someone has to pay for it. So who pays? Usually you or your insurer pay at the time, then the insurance claim settles it later. This is general information, so check your own policy for the details.
If you have comprehensive cover
Most comprehensive policies include recovery after an accident. Your insurer may send its own contractor, or you can arrange recovery yourself and claim the cost back. Ring your insurer and ask which they prefer, and where they want the car taken.
If the accident wasn’t your fault
You can claim the cost of recovery from the other driver’s insurer as part of your claim. Keep the receipt.
If you have third-party cover only
Your own policy probably won’t pay for your recovery. If the other driver was at fault, you can claim from their insurer. Otherwise, you pay.
If the police arrange the recovery
When a car is blocking the road or is unsafe, the police can have it removed by their own contractor. National regulations set the charges for that, and there is a daily storage fee until you collect the car. You pay to release the car, then claim it back through your insurance if you’re covered. Collect the car, or have it moved, as soon as you can.
If you arrange it yourself
You choose the firm and agree the price first. Our accident recovery starts from £150, and the full price depends on the distance and the condition of the car. We tell you the figure before we set off.
Keep a record
- Photos of the scene and the damage, if it’s safe to take them.
- The other driver’s name, address, registration and insurer.
- The receipt for the recovery.
- Where the car was taken, and when.
